Back in 1997 Nine Inch Nails released their first home video. It was two VHS tapes collectively known as Closure (my tapes are pictured above). The first tape chronicled the Downward Spiral tour, including on-stage performances and tour bus/hotel footage. The second tape was every music video and short film NIN had made up to that point, including the unrated/uncensored versions of “Closer”, “Happiness in Slavery” and a few other titles MTV wouldn’t let you see before.

The music videos were so explicit I had to have my older sister use her ID to even buy them, they kept them behind the counter at our local record shop.

Anyway, this VHS set is long out of print, and I haven’t had a working VCR in close to a decade.

I got an itch this morning to watch some NIN music videos so I went to Amazon to see if Closure was ever released on DVD. It was not. Though, NIN frontman Trent Reznor has put together a DVD upgrade for the set, including over 90 minutes of bonus footage, including additional tour performances, studio outtakes, and a 30 minute, fascinating “Making of Closer” documentary. And all of that bonus footage is amazing!

How do I know?

Because after Trent’s label refused to release the upgraded DVD set, he released it himself, as a torrent. Not only does it include the original 120 minute content from the VHS (in DVD quality), but it also includes ALL of that delicious bonus footage I mentioned above. Trent actually released these torrents a while ago, but I didn’t discover them until just this morning. I’m sure there are other NIN fans who’ve been waiting for this DVD release and just didn’t know they could download them right now, legally, from the band themselves, for free. The files are .img files, which mount to virtual drives and play back just as if you had the DVD in your disc drive.

This is probably my favorite shoot I’ve done of Trent. We wanted to do a surveillance-themed photo shoot that felt like it could be from the world of Year Zero. We spent an afternoon driving around a weathered neighborhood in London, stopping at interesting spots. No budget, no crew, no lights… turned out great.

There are more, I’ll post a second set tomorrow.
